Published in 1906, this is the recollections of John Casler while in the service of the Confederacy and being a member of the Stonewall Brigade during the Civil War.

Four Years in the Stonewall Brigade eBook John O Casler

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first person narrative from a confederate soldier who proudly served in the Stonewall Brigade. Surprising to me was the candid accounts of his mischief, deceiving his superiors, stealing food and visiting his home without permission. He remained faithful to the southern cause and was imprisoned late in the war.
However, the best part of the book involves his reflections after the war. He describes the political forces that divided the state of Virginia into two separate states. His observations about the causes of the war, lost opportunities to prevent it, his hardships, and tragedies seem to have left him without bitterness toward former enemies. The remarkable young man recognized the need to reunite his country.

Four Years in the Stonewall Brigade eBook John O Casler Reviews

Anyone who is interested in understanding a soldier's life in the conflict should read this book. I have read several personal accounts of soldiers and feel this is the best I have read.
A reader with any level of interest in Civil War life/death will regret getting to the final page, wishing the book continued......

While I feel the 'Classics' designation is a bit ambitious - I would none the less highly recommend your time is well spent reading slowly and comprehensively for full enjoyment.

Wished I'd purchased two copies.....so I could read it again! >)
I began reading this book thinking I was a little in the wrong set, but daring to experience the promise of a life story. I was not disappointed. If one is fortunate to have a map of the old south to follow the movements of the Civil War the wonder of each day experienced might be enhanced. Beautifully written memoirs of a violent time expose a soldier's heart and won mine. I recommend reading this one day at a time to give the described events time to be digested. Great book for any history buff!
Casler writes a remarkably detailed description of the battles he participated in during the Civil War. He fought on the side of the Confederacy. It is truly an up close and in your face account, and I am awed that he escaped alive. Nearly the whole brigade did not make it to the end. And the description if the death and burial of Stonewall himself is profoundly moving. The book is also laced with humor and must be a remarkable feat of recall. It helps that he was from the area where most of the fighting occurred and his narrative is replete with place names that enrich the scenes. Most valuable for an armchair or even a professional historian if those times.
Very interesting! It moved fast with lots of details, and I found it captivating because it was written by someone who was actually there instead of someone trying to reconstruct the errors and events of the battles from reading history books and self-determining what had happened. Casler did write this years after the events, but you feel like you are there with him those four years. And I was amazed that he was all over the place so much and not with his unit, and having to find his way back to them. Enjoyable and well worth reading.
Although written over 100 years ago about events that took place over 150 years ago, it reads surprisingly well. I believe it is one of the best first hand accounts of the Civil War written by a private infantryman in the Confederate Army. The book is full of information that reveals what life was like in the Confederate Army and provides insight into confederate generals and officers, and military strategy from the perspective of those who fought on the front lines. The author, as a member of the Stonewall Brigade, covers battles and campaigns that took place in the eastern theater. This account would be appreciated and best understood by readers with at least a general knowledge of the war in the east. It would be of particular interest to those wanting the kind of information that could only be provided by someone who was there. In addition to major battles, this account provides great insight into the degree to which the armies moved up and down the Shenandoah Valley throughout the war; the towns and cities occupied, lost, and reoccupied; and all of the fighting and skirmishing that took place along the way.
This is a great book by a Southern Soldier. You see these young southern boys leave home, hoping the war will not end before they have a fight. After there first big battle they understand that war is a tough proposition. The fellows that serve in the Stonewall Brigade became tough seasoned soldiers and have some great adventures, but slowly they disappear through wounds or death.
At the end of the war John Casler is one of the few original members still in the Stonewall Brigade. This is a great book for someone interested in the Civil War. Kurt Seraphine
